Abstract:

Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) have for decades been recognized as the fundamental units of hematopoietic regeneration. While this property is used extensively in the form of bone marrow transplantation for a number of malignancies that involve the hematopoietic system, recent data focusing on the study of native hematopoiesis, including the impact of age on HSC function, has challenged several historical concepts by suggesting little or only minimal contribution of HSCs in steady state. I will describe and present data from the use of transgenic models that allow for the study of HSC proliferation history and progeny precursor relationships in adult mice. As a second part of my talk, I will discuss the implications of HSC and progenitor cell hierarchies for leukemia-initiation.
