Title: On Tattoo

Venue: Lecture room2 (3F), Medical Education & Library Building
Abstract:
Since it was associated exclusively with yakuza (Japanese mafia), the tattoo used to be seen as something that should be concealed or kept away from the public. Though such a view shows little change, many young people are attracted to the tattoos the professional sports players such as NBA basketball or football players show on their bodies when they take off their uniforms after the game. Many foreigners coming to Japan do not hide their tattoos. Tattoo has also become popular among young Japanese as a fashion. However, in 2013, a Maori woman with symbolic tattoo called “Moco” was denied access to the public bath. This urged Japan Tourism Agency to consider the problem of tattoo and entry into the public bath. Tattoo attracts a growing interest of Japanese people.
This lecture will explore how Japan hosting Olympics and Paralympics in 2020 should understand Tattoo in showing “Omotenashi” (Japanese hospitality) together with you.
