Abstract:

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the origin of which dates back to late 19th century, focused on humanitarian assistance and rehabilitation in affected countries after two world wars. However, the nature of their works has changed since then. For the last three decades, they have worked to eradicate poverty, minimize gender gap, address girls’ education, water and sanitation, etc., both at local and international levels. In recent times, NGOs’ activities have been expanded to providing humanitarian services in conflict-affected countries such as Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq, etc., reconstruction works in tsunami-affected countries such as India, Thailand and Sri Lanka in 2004 Indian ocean earthquake and in Nepal and Haiti blighted with earthquakes. Furthermore, recognized globally as the third sector of development, NGOs have become active in wide range of specialized roles such as conflict resolution, human rights, environment, policy analysis and research.

Focusing particularly on East African and south Asian countries, this seminar will analyse the role of NGOs in development, the challenges in NGO activities, limitations, and career development in this sector.
