Title:　Childhood and adolescent thyroid cancer after Fukushima nuclear power plant accident

Abstract:

The aftermath of Tohoku earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 caused the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, which led to the release of radioactive material. Radiation exposure raised the health concern. Especially, since citizens were fear of the risk of developing thyroid cancer, long-term thyroid screening with ultrasound started to observe their health conditions.

On October 9, 2011, tentative test on those between 0 and 18 years old was initiated and completed at the end of March, 2014. Second survey resumed from April, 2014, and finished at the end of March, 2016, followed by the third test since April, 2016. So far, 133 have been diagnosed as thyroid cancer after operation.

Based on these cases, this lecture will explain the operative method, stage classification, and genetic testing.
