Summary

In 2015, “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining” was listed on UESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The site encompasses a series of 23 parts in Japan including Yawata Steel Works and Hashima Island. The registration has been made based on serial nomination by relating heritage sites in remote areas to show their outstanding universal value.

In Kumamoto, Miike coal mine and Misumi West port are included in the site. As one of those involved in the registration, I will present the process of the registration and the value of each site whilst focusing on steel industry.
