Abstract:
Bangladesh is a South Asian country with a population of 162 million people. This is considered as the most densely populated nation-state in the world. As per World Bank statistics, unemployment rate in Bangladesh in 2016 was 10.4%. Creating employment opportunities for such a large number of workforces is indeed a daunting task. Conversely, many companies are operating with 10-15% of vacant position due to lack of skilled people. Besides, Bangladeshi industries cannot innovate successfully by relaying on their internal R&D due to lack of required investments. Partnership between industry and university is crucial to shrink this gap. In Bangladesh, the existing industry-university collaborations are confined to internship projects, consultancies and holding seminars, workshop & conferences. The Government of Bangladesh has initiated a program to enhance the support for university research as a component of its higher education strategy (2006-26). Academic Innovation Fund (AIF) of the ‘Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project’ (HEQEP) will allow universities to conduct applied research to deal with critical economic challenges in sectors like agriculture, environment and health. It is expected that through this initiative university-industry collaboration will gain momentum in Bangladesh. However, in addition to the intrinsic challenges of such relationship, the existing social, political and economic environments in Bangladesh impose several obstacles to achieve sustainable development. Lack of co-ordination among partners often leads to duplication of effort or lost opportunities. Under this circumstances, learning and sharing experience with international partners is essential.
