Title:  Development of functional carbohydrates

-Relationship between carbohydrates and health from the perspective of a sugar refinery company

Abstract:

Consumption of sugar, as described to be barometer of civilization in the past, reached its peak in the 1970s. After that many sugar refinery companies focused on the development and business of new carbohydrate based materials. Ensuiko Sugar Refining Co., Ltd. established Carbohydrate Research Laboratory focusing on the research and development of carbohydrate based materials for the maintenance of proper health. It pioneered in the development and commercialization of oligosaccharides based products for improving intestinal flora and development of functional foods. In addition, it also succeeded in the industrial production of cyclodextrin (CD) used for various purposes in food materials. Further development of branched CDs enabled their wider use in other fields than food industries.
