Title: Data Health Plan and Population Health Management Utilizing Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:

The medical care system in Japan is characterized by the free access to healthcare facilities and freedom of doctors to practice medicine. Because of the lack of mechanism that controls the balance between demand and supply of medical services, this system is likely to increase medical expenses. Focusing on medical insurers who are responsible for payment of medical expenses, we have conducted studies and activities to prevent people from developing or worsening of diseases to eliminate unexpected hospitalization and dialysis utilizing expertise of healthcare professionals (particularly nurses), aiming at streamlining medical expenses and improving people’s quality of life.

 

Our goal is to develop a mechanism by which an autonomously-formed healthcare team appropriately identifies people who are at high risk of developing disease, provides them with preventive and/or nursing care and controls the balance between demand and supply of medical services and by which medical insurers benchmark this balance based on appropriate evaluation indexes. In this seminar, I will talk about the practice of population health management, utilization of artificial intelligence and relevant venture businesses to realize this mechanism.

 

Our laboratory has been conducting collaborative epidemiological and interventional researches on chronic diseases with the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, in the neighboring area of the Centre. We have trained local female citizens as community health workers. After training, they visit houses in their community to conduct health check and health education using various devices and communication technologies developed in Japan. I would like to talk about this activity as well.
