Title: Intelligence necessary to confront unexpected risks
Date&Time: 20 Dec. (Fri.) 2019, 13:30-15:00
Venue: 100th Anniversary Hall of Engineering Faculty, Kurokami South Campus, Kumamoto University
Abstract:
The era of globalization is characterized by the simultaneous evolution of two conflicting tendencies. While people tend to demand better certainty and predictability by big data and algorithm, uncertainties continue to grow and unpredictable contingencies (unexpected/accidental events) occur frequently as suggested by the idea of “risk society” (W. Beck). I believe that people living in Kumamoto experienced this problem through the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake.
In addition to natural disasters including tsunamis, earthquakes and rainstorms the system failure of global economy may cause contingency in the local level equivalent to disasters. If such a situation strikes society, what kind of utility will our intellectual stock and experience have? How will the “survival” of individuals and society be ensured? Society should tackle this issue with all our strength, with a multidisciplinary approach that goes beyond the border of humanities and sciences.
During the seminar, I will try to approach such issues referring to a TV program in which I made a regular observation of Argentine, an emerging country in Latin America which went through national bankruptcy in 2001, in collaboration with the group of NHK reporters.
