Abstract
Ever since the understanding of the fact that cells arise from other cells in 1800s, scientists has been fascinated with the concept of stem cells as early as 1900s when attempts have been made to generate fertilized mammalian eggs outside of human body. Ultimately, research has led to the development of various treatments such as the successful bone marrow transplant in 1968 in treating SCID siblings, skin grafts, and many more.
In 2006, with the establishment of a method for the derivation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells by Yamanaka factors, has provided promises for various diseases by addressing many issues plaguing the scientific research in stem cells. It has paved the way for novel therapeutics culminating in increased interest in the potential of stem cells.
In our presentation, we will explore the present status of the scientific research in utilization of iPS cells in treatment of diseases in different tissue. Furthermore, we will also be focusing on other types of stem cells being explored for the treatment of diseases and compare them with the potential, thus, presented by the advancement of iPS cells. This will provide us with an understanding of the present status of the stem cell research, its future application in disease research and modelling, the standing issues, and the answers being sought to address in the various hindrance in its application.
