Abstract:
One of the fundamental questions in understanding tissue development and maintenance is how cells organize the sophisticated 3-dimensional structures each of which is closely related to their developmental and physiological roles. Epithelial cell sheets plays fundamental roles in this context. Previous studies have revealed signaling proteins involved in apicobasal cell polarity and planar cell polarity(PCP), two essential elements of 3-dimensional structure of tissues.

To address the above issues, we have been engaged in revealing the mechanism how polarity of a single cell is established and maintained, and how polarity of a single cell is linked to the structure of tissues. In the present talk, I will show you the results of our ongoing experiments related to the following issues.

1) What is the spatial cue that determines the polarity of a single cell?

2) The mechanism that determines epithelial apicobasal polarity: aPKC-PAR cassette.

3) Is there any conserved mechanism governing the polarity of a single cell?

4) How the aPKC-PAR cassette linked to cell fates?

5) How the aPKC-PAR cassette linked to planar cell polarity?
