Lecture 1 (14:30-15:30 )
SUZUKI Akiko (Kyoto Institute for Regional Prospects, Kyoto Prefectural University )
Title: Social Design for a Cooperative Multicultural Society
Summary:
In recent years foreign residents have been playing an increasingly active role in local communities, in the business sector, and in educational institutions. We will continue to see more efforts to cross the barriers between Japanese and foreigners who live together and to seek innovative practices which can make good use of this diversity.
On the other hand, the movement of people due to globalization is very different from the movement of money and goods. The movement of living people has a great effect on them and their families, as well as on the countries they leave and the countries they come to. When we consider foreigners who are already living in Japan, they can face various problems in their schools, workplaces, or communities – problems such as learning the Japanese language, schooling for their children, and work.
To deal with these problems, it is important to view foreign residents as a part of the social structure and as partners in society. In this lecture I will first talk about the change in policy for accepting foreigners into Japan and the legal status of foreigners in Japan. I then want to consider the current state of social design and of cooperative multicultural society in Japan while discussing the experiences of those working at NPOs.
Lecture 2 (15:30-16:30 )
TANABE Juichiro (The Kumamoto Consultation and Support Plaza )
Title: Challenges of Kumamoto City for Multicultural Society: Analysis from a perspective of coordinator
Summary:
While the number of Japanese populations has been declining, that of foreign residents in Japan has been increasing. It is urgent for Japan to make itself a multicultural society wherein people having different cultural and religious backgrounds can live in harmony. Kumamoto is not an exception. The number of foreign residents in Kumamoto Prefecture keeps rising. Without doubt, building multicultural Kumamoto will boost the local revitalization. As a coordinator at Kumamoto Consultation and Support Plaza for Foreign Residents, I have supported variety of foreign residents in Kumamoto City. In this seminar, I will present challenges facing us in making Kumamoto City a multicultural society. Since the creation of multicultural society is a glocal agenda, I also want to discuss with participants qualities and skills leaders in cultural and religious diversity should sharpen.
