Abstract:
I witnessed a case of parental abuse of a young child, which led me to realize as a citizen living in the community that children and their parents are not well protected in the community, and that the system to protect them does not really cover people concerned. As a citizen and a professional nurse, I would like to present how I have sought what “I” and “we” can do to prevent child abuse in Koto City, Tokyo Prefecture. Over the course of my 14 years of activities, including collaborations with NGOs, government agencies, businesses and citizens, the concept of “discipline” has been transformed into “childcare without punishment” or “no corporal punishment”. As a citizen and a human being, what can I do when I find child abuse in my community? With such keywords as children’s rights, gender equality, human rights and multidisciplinary cooperation, I would like those of us, who were children in the past and who have passed time ahead, to think together about “creating a system to protect children in the community”.
