Abstract:

What is international medical cooperation? What can I do as a physician?

The maternal mortality rate in Japan is as extremely low as 3.4 per 100,000 total births (reported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 2016) thanks to the well-established universal health insurance system that provides advanced care at any time. On the other hand, there are many countries where the child and maternal mortality rates are dozens of times higher than that of Japan.

In Cambodia, I established an elementary school and filmed the process to make a documentary. I also built community health centers. In these activities, I met many people who were crying.

I have continued to support people in various countries including Cambodia, Laos, and Tanzania. Nevertheless, a sense of powerlessness and frustration still lingers in my heart. How can we change the world?

And then, the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly attacked the world. I cannot visit those who are in tears in their countries though I want to. With a sense of frustration, what efforts have I made?

I would like to talk about my experiences and changes in my feelings in my challenging lifework to wipe tears away from people and save their lives.
