Abstract:

After receiving my PhD in biochemistry, I spent about 20 years as a researcher of biochemistry and cell biology at Japanese and US universities including Kumamoto University. I then switched my mind and chose a career path to utilize my academic experience in a pharmaceutical company.

Medical Affairs (MA) in pharmaceutical companies contributes to maximizing product values through discovering unmet clinical needs and conducting post-marketing clinical researches. MA is also responsible for publication of the results of clinical trials/studies as well as collection and analysis of the latest scientific/clinical information. Therefore, MA activities require sophisticated scientific expertise. In Japan, MA has a short history that began to be established about 10 years ago in domestic pharmaceutical companies, but its function has been expanded and strengthened over time.

In this seminar, I will introduce my experience as an example of career paths of PhD holders, and introduce MA activities to which academic experience can be applied.
