Abstract:

The Tsubai Monjo (“Monjo” means documents in Japanese) are a series of historical forgeries by Masataka Tsubai (1770–1837), a native of Tsubai Village, Souraku District, Yamashiro Province (currently Kizugawa City, Kyoto Prefecture). At the request of his clients, he created forgeries so that they would appear to be documents created in the Edo Period by reproducing medieval documents with years of occurrence. Many people have mistaken the contents of the Tsubai Monjo as actual documents from the Medieval Period, even though they look new. Tsubai is not well recognized even among researchers, and many of his documents have been considered as genuine medieval historical documents. This series of pseudo-documents is unparalleled. Not only are several hundred pieces distributed throughout the Kansai region of Japan, but they are also utilized in an ongoing manner.
