Abstract:
The roles and responsibilities of pharmacies and pharmacists have changed remarkably since the universal health insurance system was introduced in the 1960s and dispensaries began to operate separately from medical practices in the 1970s. As medical technologies continued to advance, clinical practice became more complicated and sophisticated. Therefore, it was necessary to expand the educational content and extend the length of education to train pharmacists to fulfill the needs of society and the health care system. A six-year pharmacy program was introduced as a replacement for the four-year program in 2006. Although the number of pharmacists who have completed the longer program has increased and many more pharmacists have become aware of their new roles resulting from demographic and epidemiological transitions in Japan, further clinical, educational, and academic efforts are needed to make advanced pharmacist roles common practice in clinical settings. In this seminar, we would like to discuss the changes in circumstances affecting pharmacists and their practices and the potential role of pharmacists in the future.
