Abstract:

We are now in an era of once-in-a-century disasters, including earthquakes, torrential rains, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun has been on the front lines of news reporting, with our reporters themselves being victims of and involved in such disasters. In the aftermath of the Kumamoto earthquake, which was referred to as “a chain of shocks,” we focused our efforts on providing information on the damage and evacuees. Then we focused on the verification and reporting of issues related to recovery and reconstruction. As a local newspaper, we have paid particular attention to the gaps in the progress of reconstruction that have emerged over time. However, it is undeniable that memories of the disaster are fading. With the occurrence of the torrential rains causing flooding of Kuma River, which claimed many victims, the issues of disaster evacuation and flood control measures have gained prominent attention. In this world, covered with the shadow of infectious diseases and war, how can we convey and delve into information from the macro perspective while focusing on the micro aspects of the region? Looking back on our coverage of the earthquake, I will introduce one aspect of our ongoing exploration at the Kumanichi editorial office.
