Abstract:

You may think that people with an arts background occupy a large proportion of positions in government offices. However, in the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, there are many officials with a scientific background who are actively working on reviewing, analyzing, and refining policies using their scientific expertise.

In particular, pharmaceutical officials with knowledge of chemistry, biology, and pharmacology are responsible for developing systems related to the everyday lives of people and the maintenance and promotion of health, as well as systems to deliver safe medical care, focusing on the effects of drugs, food, and chemicals on the human body.

In this seminar, I will talk about how these systems are developed and how scientific findings are applied to Ministry policies in Japan using examples of current topics, such as COVID-19 infection control, and focusing on the duties and career paths of pharmaceutical officials.
