Abstract:
Tourism is one of the key industries driving the economy of Kumamoto Prefecture, along with agriculture and the semiconductor and automobile industries. However, tourism has been changing. People’s tastes and preferences have become more diverse, and more people are travelling individually rather than on group tours. As the world has become more digital, more people prefer to gather information about their destinations online, as well as make their reservations online. What people want to do when traveling has also changed. Instead of trips to famous tourist destinations, more people want to develop their individual interests and tastes, and go on trips that allow them to experience the true nature of the region and its lifestyle.
In order to revitalize Kumamoto’s regional economy through tourism, taking a brand new approach is required to accurately respond to these changes. Kumamoto DMC is a tourism strategy company established by Kumamoto Prefecture and Higo Bank in order to revitalize Kumamoto through tourism after the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes. In this seminar, we will present about Kumamoto DMC’s vision for a “New Tourism” and introduce some of the specific initiatives it is pursuing.
